I was in the middle of writing an entirely different mommy monday post, when my mother (ScienceGrandma) called.
She's got cancer and will have surgery within a week.
I volunteered that Minnow and I will be there for her as much as she wants us, up until my contract officially starts in mid-August.
She promised to call me when the surgery is scheduled. And then I'll buy the plane ticket.
This is, of course, terribly disruptive to my personal and professional plans for the next few weeks. But that doesn't matter at all, not when your mommy wants you to hold her hand when she goes into surgery and to be there for her when she convalesces.

Really sorry to hear the news. My prayers are with you. Hope her surgery goes well.
Dear Science Woman,
I am very sorry to hear about your mother. Cancer is evil and disruptive. But remember that she is strong, fairly young (50s, right?), is otherwise healthy, and has people who love her. What is the prognosis? Will she have to go through chemo and radiation treatment? The treatment is awful, but it means that she is being proactive and attacking the cancer.
My father was diagnosed with chronic leukemia last year and went through chemo last summer and fall. He is strong and still insists onn going on 40+ mile bike rides. But it completely exhausts him and he still works 5 days a week. He comes down with terrible colds that last months and had shingles recently. He is determined to live well in spite of it all.
Thinking of you,

Science gal. . . I am so sorry. My mother has been fighting lung cancer since last September. It has turned my life upside down, but you are right. . . when mommy needs you. . . you go.
I am getting on a plane this Sunday to help dad out for a week or so.
Be safe. . . enjoy your time. . . hug minnow.
Ciao
SO sorry to hear about your mom!
I wish you lots of strength in the next while...
I am so sorry to hear that. You and yours are in my thoughts.
Oh, ScienceWoman, I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm familiar with both cancer patients (and how stressful and scary treatments seem) and sick mothers. I'll be thinking of you and your family and if you can think of anything I can do to help, please let me know.
I'm so sorry. My sister and I got that call three years ago, while I was visiting her in NY. I hope your mom does as well as my mom -- cancer-free for 2 years now.
Oh no, that is dreadful news. Here's hoping everything goes well adn your mother is well soon.

Thinking about you and your family. I hope your Mom's surgery goes well and that you find a way to keep your spirits up. If there is anything any of us can do, you know just to ask.

I'm so sorry. Why can't live give an up without also dolling out a down?
Oh, I am so sorry to hear this news. Wishing the best outcome for you and your mommy.
Sorry to hear this. Wishing you and your mama the best! Since she's going right in for surgery, does that mean that at this point there may be a shot of getting all or most of it through removal of the tumorous cells? Got my fingers crossed.
I went though the same thing with my dad two years ago.
The time we got to spend together was some of the best we've ever had. It's still precious to me.
Hugs to you.
My best wishes go to you and your mom and your family. And don't forget to look out for yourself every now and then too, even in the midst of being there for your mom.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I'll be praying for you and Science grandma.
Here is Thanksgiving 2008, and I, Science Woman's Mom, is well and cancer-free. I just read all your good wishes, thoughts and prayers for our family. I thank you all from the depth of my heart.
Greetings ScienceWoman!
I just dropped by because I wanted to let you know that I think you have made such a wonderful piece of work in here. Despite the fact that I haven't had such a great experience before, I think I have gotten what you mean, then I realized I love to follow your footsteps. I am being respectful as I can. I really admire you and your work.
Regards
