- Winning a big science award in high school (launched me on the science track and gave a huge ego boost at a critical time)
- Graduating from college (graduation day itself was so-so but just knowing I survived counts for a lot)
- The mistakes I made in pursuing my M.S. (which taught me a lot about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it) (specifically, the time I spent soul-searching while I was in the field)
- Getting my PhD fellowship
- Getting this paper accepted

big professional moments
I spent some time yesterday just being really excited about my first accepted publication. I realized that if I really am embarking on a research career, this pub is the first of many. And while I am sure each one will occasion joy upon acceptance, not all of them will be an occasion for a bottle of bubbly or a major milestone in my career. That train of thought led me to contemplate what my major professional milestones have been so far. Here's my list:

I am currenly awaiting news of a publication I submitted for consideration. It is such a long wait!
Delurking to say congratulations on getting your paper accepted. My biggest milestone was finishing my PhD. I'm still very proud of myself for surviving and coming out in one piece. Other milestones include having my first paper accepted, being offered a great postdoc, and now being offered my first tenure track position.

Great post! My milestones: winning a prize in a regional math contest in junior high; getting hired as an undergrad researcher in college; getting my Ph.D.; getting my first journal article accepted; getting this job.

My biggest milestone was using Maxwell's Equations to uncover my relationship problems with women.
My biggest milestone was quiting my job to pursue charity work. Believe it or not, I thought that because my major in college was business, I could take the skills of my grand-father, uncles, and my father and start a contracting and and construction firm. Being a woman in a male dominated industry is difficult. I put my true dreams on hold to make their dreams come true. Your blog has been an inspiration. I just started my blog titled, "On being a Woman General Contractor." Hang in there and God bless!

You know, your question about milestones has me thinking about my own post now...
Although I'm not in the sciences, I have been enjoying your blog for a little while now. My biggest milestone was writing my first novel. Then my second one. Getting either of them published would be the biggest milestone yet. One of these days...
My list:
Getting a great summer-job before university, which only happened because Wendy's rejected me first (I had no car)
Being offered my dream job before I even graduated from undergrad (no worries!)
My girlfriend-of-6-years getting into medical school (okay, that was her professional achievement, but I was still super excited)
Attending my 1st big conference during my 1st trip outside North America, ever
Defending my M.Sc thesis (coming soon... very soon... in fact I should get back to work!)
And congrats on your paper, scientist-lady, I hope I get to publish someday.

I'm only 16, but my milestones would have to be when I became a Christian last year and that made me feel... Safer, I guess. A new confidence. Before that, the first concert I went to and realized that those were my favourite place to be that that I wanted a lifestyle that revolved around that.
And hopefully, there's a lot more to come.

You Go, WOMAN! congratulations! I am doing my PhD as well...Well, at this point, trying to just survive through my dissertation proposal! Yeekers! I am the mother of 1 and happily married. A good balance between personal and professional is sometimes a struggle...Anyway, sending Kudos to you on this very important accomplishment!

well, having 4 kids than going back to school changing majors, getting my BS (yes, cum laude) then a fellowship and my MA... guess that would be it. Now that my daughter almost has HER MA I guess I gotta go back and finish my PhD... gotta keep that bar high for the kids...
