formatting references sucks

Pardon my language, but I now know why some authors limit their citations to a small list of articles rather than doing an extensive lit. rev. This is basically the last thing I have to do before the submitting the paper, and it is way worse than I thought it was going to be.

The society to whom I'm submitting says that journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index. Which is fine, except that I can't get access to it via the web. So I am forced to paw through other papers published in my target journal and see if I can find the words abbreviated there. But that doesn't help with everything. For example, how would you abbreviate Letters? Lett.? How about analytical? or report?

BAH HUMBUG!

Are you using EndNote? It was a necessary program when I was writing my thesis. It has tons of style types and the one you're looking for is likely to be in it. Good luck.

Must concur. I managed to make it through my whole PhD and half my postdoc without, and with hours of endless reference torture. I finally caved (today no less) and am learning how to use it. I highly, highly recommend getting it. The student version isn't too expensive.

Actually, endnote was the source of some of my problems. The supposed style for the journal to which I am submitting is all wrong. Plus it kept trying to change the in text citations around on me (for example, say I wanted to change (Chica 2005) to Chica (2005) reports... and Endnote would change it back). I finally had to uninstall endnote for the final phases of paper drafting. I am, however, looking forward to reinstalling it, because its how my ~1 gig of pdfs are organized. I can't find anything without it! One more reason to get this paper submitted.
