message on my tea bag

To me the quotes on the tea bags are one more reason to love Good Earth tea. As I'm writing cover letters on job apps today, the message from my tea cup is:

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance." - Socrates

Did Socrates get it right?

I think Socrates was ahead of his time, but I don't agree with him on this one. Knowledge can be used for evil. I can think of a lot more "good" than just knowledge. Like love, compassion, service, etc. Someone could have a lot of compassion and not have much knowledge. Though, I suppose, how you define knowledge makes a big difference. Ignorance is annoying and likely leads to lots of evil, but there are many other routes to evil as well, such as greed, sloth, etc. Again the definition of ignorance would make a big impact on the meaning of the statement.
Well, that's enough philosophy for tonight.

I tend to think of knowledge as good. However, when I think about it, knowledge is a tool. It can be used for good or evil depending upon the person with the knowledge.

When I first read the quote, I thought "wow, Socrates hit it right on" but then I started thinking about it and went down the same lines as writer chica and astroprof. I wonder if this quote could be used to kick off a discussion of scientific ethics (the should we clone? sort of discussion rather than the should we plagiarize? type)

I've been meaning to read it. Sometime, when I have time. Maybe when I'm unemployed after my Ph.D.! Thanks for the reminder.
